nevirapine
Objective: To draw attention to the many cases of Stevens--Johnson
syndrome (SJS) or toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) related to nevirapine
detected in a multinational case--control study of SJS and TEN.
Methods: Actively detected cases and matched hospital controls were
interviewed for exposure to drugs and other risk factors.
The reaction began 10--240 days after the introduction of nevirapine
(median, 12 days) and all patients had received escalating doses.
In 10 patients the reaction occurred with the initial dosage.
Because of the severity of these reactions and the long elimination
half-life of nevirapine, we suggest discontinuation of the drug
as soon as any eruption occurs. nevirapine, HIV infection.
nevirapine
It improves the function of the immune system, helping
to prevent other infections that may occur in patients with HIV
disease (increases the CD4 counts) - It may help increase appetite
which helps patients to gain weight and improve their energy level.
Nevirapine is available as a 200 mg tablet and should be stored
in a tightly closed container at room temperature.
Starting at a lower dose for the first 2 weeks has been shown to
decrease the development of rash, a common side effect with nevirapine.
Check with your doctor immediately if you develop a rash while taking
nevirapine.
In most cases the rash can be treated with anti-inflammatory medications
(eg. Advil®, Naproxen®) and antihistamines (eg. Reactine®,
Claritin®). nevirapine, Adults.
nevirapine
Side effects: The major side effect of nevirapine is
a rash, which happened to 22% of people in studies.
If nevirapine causes a severe rash and you have to stop treatment,
the company that makes the drug recommends that you DO NOT try the
drug again.
Other side effects can be elevated liver function tests, fever and
muscle soreness.
Reverse transcriptase is a part of HIV required to infect cells
in the body and make more virus.
Nevirapine has been approved for use in combination with other anti-HIV
drugs, including protease inhibitors.
Nevirapine combined with indinavir (Crixivan) has been shown to
have a strong anti-HIV effect, but the dose of Crixivan may need
to be increased to 1,000mg every 8 hours due to a drug interaction
(see below). nevirapine, Fortovase.

Severe, life-threatening, and in some cases fatal hepatotoxicity,
including fulminant and cholestatic hepatitis, hepatic necrosis
and hepatic failure, has been reported in patients treated with
VIRAMUNE.
These have included cases of Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal
necrolysis, and hypersensitivity reactions characterized by rash,
constitutional findings, and organ dysfunction.
Patients developing signs or symptoms of severe skin reactions or
hypersensitivity reactions must discontinue VIRAMUNE as soon as
possible.
The majority of these patients received 120 mg/m2/day of nevirapine
for approximately 4 weeks followed by 120 mg/m2/b.i.d.
Thirty-five percent of patients treated with VIRAMUNE® experienced
rash compared with 19% of patients treated in control groups of
either ZDV+ddI or ZDV alone (Table 2). nevirapine, symptoms.
